What Does Savanna Do Outside of Psychiatry?
Originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Savanna has followed an academic journey that took her across the country. She completed her undergraduate education at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware, before earning her doctorate at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and she now calls South Carolina home. The diversity of her training gave her both a strong clinical foundation and depth of perspective that she brings to Psychiatry of the Palm Beaches.
Savanna has always been drawn to psychiatry. It is something she pursued with intention and genuine passion to help others achieve, live, and maintain their best lives.
During her undergraduate education, one of Savanna’s professors introduced her to a philosophy that would shape the course of her career: the body follows the mind. The idea resonated with her immediately. It was at that moment that psychiatry came into focus, not as an abstract interest but as a clear and compelling path forward.
That early insight has anchored her work ever since. Savanna remains dedicated to helping her patients understand the powerful connection between mind and body, and strives to give them the tools to strengthen their mental well-being.
Above all, Savanna is an attentive and active listener. She believes that feeling heard is one of the most important components of psychiatric care, and that being truly listened to can make all the difference for a patient.
“It is beyond empowering to feel like you are being heard and have someone backing you.” – Savanna Smallwood-Corcoran
That belief guides how she works. She is empathetic and patient, and she will go the extra mile for her patients, whether that means building a strong therapeutic relationship over time or making sure they receive the very best care possible.
That willingness to go the extra mile is rooted in her own experience. Growing up as an athlete gave Savanna a firsthand understanding of teamwork, resilience, and discipline, and exposed her to people from many different backgrounds. She knows how stressful competition can be, and how the constant pressure to perform can weigh heavily on mental health. Because she has felt those pressures herself, she connects easily with a wide range of people who have faced similar challenges in their own lives.
Ultimately, what sets Savanna apart is the combination of her attentiveness, her genuine empathy, and her unwillingness to settle for anything less than excellent care for the people she serves.
Savanna has a strong belief that care should be centered around the whole person, not just the diagnosis. She leads with attentive, active listening, because every patient deserves to feel genuinely heard, respected, and involved in their care.
She believes it is essential to create a supportive, safe, and comfortable environment where patients feel accepted. From there, she collaborates with each person to build an individualized care plan designed to put them on the road to their best lives.
Treatment is never something done to her patients. It is something built with them, a partnership rooted in trust, patience, and a commitment to providing excellent care.
Outside of psychiatry, Savanna loves spending time with her family and going to the beach. Her friends and family would describe her as kindhearted, authentic, and supportive, and brings this energy to Psychiatry of the Palm Beaches as well.
Savanna is the kind of provider who makes you feel like you matter, because to her, you genuinely do. She shows up with energy, compassion, and authenticity every single day, and she is committed to being the kind of provider her patients feel truly lucky to have in their corner.
