What do patients say about Dr. Sandy Kaufman?
Sandy Kaufman grew up in Brooklyn, New York. His father owned a small drugstore and was the sole pharmacist. Sandy noticed that his dad had the greatest respect for medical doctors, which helped inspire Dr. Kaufman and his brother to attend medical school. His father’s community pharmacy had many customers with mental disorders, and Sandy was impressed at how he saw them get better with medication and therapy, which inspired his interest in psychiatry.
Dr. Kaufman received his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College and his medical degree from New York Medical College. After medical school, he did his internship and residency at Albany Medical College and then proceeded to join the United States Air Force. While in military service, he was stationed in Florida and ultimately promoted to base psychiatrist and supervision of Emergency Room coverage of Titusville, Apopka, Orlando, and Winter Park, Florida. Upon leaving the Air Force, Dr. Kaufman sought to complete his psychiatric training in Boston, where, he ultimately became a provider for the Harvard Community Health Plan, which was an early managed care predecessor and one of the consultants to the prestigious Philips Andover Academy.
Dr. Kaufman has decades of experience and is comfortable with many treatment modalities. His early medical background in family practice and internal medicine has led to his philosophy of treating the patient as a whole, incorporating both the medical and psychological. Dr. Kaufman notes, “I deeply enjoy helping people get better, and this brings me a lot of personal value and satisfaction.” The feeling of excitement as a teenager when he saw people in his dad’s pharmacy get better with medication and support, has always stayed with him and grown through the course of his extensive career. This sense of self-worth, when he sees a patient get better and thrive, inspires him every day.
Dr. Kaufman treats all forms of mental illness and starts with a careful evaluation to achieve an accurate diagnosis or set of diagnoses while establishing an optimum therapeutic alliance and rapport with each individual. Dr. Kaufman’s philosophy of care is collaborative and based on each individual and their needs so that each person can achieve the maximum possible gains. Dr. Kaufman looks for any medical conditions that can impact mental health treatment, to position them for an optimum chance of success. He believes mental health is a team sport, with the doctor and the patient working together. It is important for each person to understand the risks and benefits of their medication and to understand any possible interactions it may have with all medications they are taking. He always works on developing a recommended treatment plan that the patient understands and is in agreement with.
In helping a patient live their best life, he finds that an optimal balance of therapy and medication is important. His mission is to help patients overcome conditions and difficulties and to help them live their best lives, impacting all aspects of their lives: personal, family, work, and education. The focus is to achieve the goals that were established at the onset of treatment and to even revisit those goals as treatment continues. Dr. Kaufman firmly believes, “It is joyful and fulfilling when you see your patients achieve maximum success, and you patiently and supportively collaborate with them to achieve that.”
Dr. Sandy Kaufman is happily married, with many children and grandchildren. He enjoys golf, and bocci ball, and used to be an avid tennis player. He has enjoyed Broadway theater from an early age. He also is a fan of both college and professional football.
