What Does Amanda Do Outside of Psychiatry?
Amanda grew up in Michigan, where an early sense of community and a passion for being of service to others began to take shape. During her young adulthood, she developed a strong passion for volunteering and spent time serving a wide variety of communities, including individuals experiencing homelessness, single mothers, underserved healthcare populations, people with mental and physical disabilities, and animal shelters.
Those experiences gave her a deep appreciation for the unique challenges individuals may face and reinforced something she carries into every patient relationship today: despite how different people’s lives may appear on the surface, we all share more in common than we often realize.
She later moved to Tennessee to attend Bethel University’s Physician Assistant program, building the clinical foundation that guides her practice today. Her path into healthcare was shaped not only by her education but by years of hands-on experience across a variety of medical settings, each one reinforcing her belief that mental health is central to a patient’s overall well-being and recovery.
Amanda chose psychiatry because she genuinely enjoys connecting with people and helping others live their best lives. Throughout her healthcare experience, she consistently saw how mental health played a significant role in people’s overall health, recovery, and quality of life, regardless of the medical setting.
She has also known individuals personally who have struggled with significant mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. She has witnessed the profound impact that these challenges can have on individuals, families, and communities.
“These experiences gave me a deeper understanding of how common and far-reaching mental health challenges are, and how important it is for people to feel supported, heard, and connected to care early on.” – Amanda Skipworth
Those experiences did not make her fearful of the hard conversations. They made her ready for them. Amanda finds it incredibly rewarding to walk alongside patients during difficult times, help them recognize their own strengths, and support them in creating meaningful change.
Amanda’s philosophy of care is centered on compassion, collaboration, and treating the whole person. She strives to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where patients feel heard, understood, and respected.
She believes everyone deserves the opportunity to live a fulfilling life. That is why she takes the time to understand each patient’s unique story, experiences, and goals. By identifying their strengths and working together to overcome challenges, she aims to help patients build resilience, improve their well-being, and become the best version of themselves.
Amanda views treatment as a partnership. She is committed to providing individualized, evidence-based care that empowers patients to make meaningful and lasting changes in their lives.
One of Amanda’s greatest strengths as a provider is her ability to build genuine, trusting relationships with people. She is highly empathetic, which allows her to connect with people from all walks of life and understand their experiences on a deeper level.
She values collaboration and strives to involve patients in every step of their treatment, so they feel heard, respected, and empowered. Her goal is always to work alongside her you, not in front of you. This creates meaningful, lasting change that supports both mental health and overall sense of fulfillment.
Amanda meets people exactly where they are, without judgment and without assumptions. That quality, rooted in years of volunteering and lived experience across diverse communities,
Outside of Psychiatry, Amanda stays connected to the people and experiences that bring meaning and balance to her life.
