Dr. Peguero was born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Universidad of Iberoamericana Medical School; she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Throughout the early stages of her career, she demonstrated a strong commitment to volunteer work on both local and international levels. After graduating, she dedicated several months to serving the underserved psychiatric population at the Professor Rey Ardid Mental Health Hospital Unit in Capatillo, Dominican Republic. Dr. Peguero completed her psychiatry residency at the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Psychiatry Residency Program. During her residency, she was actively involved in research, resulting in multiple publications.
Towards the end of medical school, Dr. Peguero found that during her psychiatry rotations, she was able to connect with patients on a deeper level. Psychiatry allowed her to effectively practice patient-centered care tailored to individual needs. She found fulfillment in helping people navigate their mental health journeys, often involving their most vulnerable thoughts and fears. She discovered her passion for psychiatry during an away rotation at Larkin Community Hospital in Coral Gables, Florida. She quickly connected with others, often through shared cultural experiences, and learned to appreciate the complexity of psychiatric care, something that was not as emphasized in the Dominican Republic due to ongoing stigma.
Dr. Peguero takes a holistic approach to psychiatry. She believes in collaboration with her patients, their families, and with other providers. She believes that building a respectful, trusting relationship is the foundation for effective treatment. Healing begins when both her and the individual are on the same page. She understands that no two people are the same and treats each person as a unique individual. She does not just look at symptoms and medications, but also explores each person’s psychological, social, and medical contributors to their mental health. Her goal is to provide thoughtful, comprehensive care that sees the full person. Her philosophy of care began through her passion for writing. She enjoys creating stories, developing characters, and creating positive and productive endings. She uses this passion in her patient care. As a psychiatrist, she sees herself as helping people rewrite their stories, guiding them toward better endings. That narrative lens helps her approach each patient’s journey with compassion and creativity. Dr. Peguero has positively impacted many lives and has helped many people achieve long-lasting change. She incorporates active listening, guidance, medication, and treatment plans to help others live their best lives.
Dr. Peguero creates a safe space for people to open up and seek help regarding their well-being and lives. She is open, approachable, and caring. Patients often tell her that she creates a comfortable environment where discussing their symptoms and life stressors comes with ease. She takes on a holistic approach and cares deeply about making a difference in each person’s life. If you get to know her, you will find Dr. Peguero to be thoughtful and driven, and always ready to listen and connect with others. In helping herself navigate challenging times, Dr. Peguero used phrases like “day by day” and “trust the process.” She uses this with others, especially when they are facing uncertainty in their own healing. Achieving lasting positive change requires a step by step process that isn’t rushed but is steady. She helps people understand this and walks with them every step of the way.
Dr. Peguero enjoys going to group fitness classes a few times a week, usually yoga, Pilates, or barre. She enjoys a good book and exploring new places. She finds peace and joy through various travels, from a warm relaxing day at the beach, to a cold winter ski trip.
