What Does Dr. Velasquez Do in His Free Time?
Dr. Velasquez earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his psychiatry residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, one of the most prestigious training programs in the country. He has since practiced across Maine, New Mexico, and Massachusetts before making his home in Florida, where he now serves the Palm Beach Gardens community.
Dr. Velasquez was drawn to psychiatry for its unique position in medicine: it requires understanding not just the biology of a patient but the full story of who they are. He remains inspired by the rapid evolution of the science of human behavior, which continually deepens his appreciation for how complex and interconnected the mind truly is.
Dr. Velasquez believes that effective psychiatric care begins with understanding each person’s unique story. He recognizes that psychiatry differs from other medical specialties in that diagnoses are always evolving. Treatment is shaped by biology, psychology, and the full context of a person’s relationships and life experiences.
In Dr. Velasquez’s eyes, culture and personal history play a meaningful role in treatment. A book, film, or shared experience that has mattered deeply to a person can serve as a powerful bridge to self-reflection and honest conversation. Dr. Velasquez draws on these connections to help patients feel understood and to make the work of psychiatry feel more accessible.
Dr. Velasquez has training in both child/adolescent and adult psychiatry, which helps him to understand how early experiences shape mental health over time. He works closely with each person to shape a plan that fits their life. Together, you and Dr. Velasquez can establish a care plan that is grounded in the latest advances in psychiatry but remains attentive to the emotional and personal sides of your life as well.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Velasquez is an avid reader of history and philosophy. Patients and colleagues often describe him as perceptive, calm, and deeply engaged, and he brings that same presence to every visit, helping the people in his care feel understood, supported, and equipped to live their best lives.
