Kevin grew up in Pennsylvania in a working-class family, with his mother being a stay-at-home mom and his father driving a truck. He experienced a few family crises and some addiction, and he never felt like he fully fit in amongst his peers, all of which later influenced him to focus on mental health issues as a medical provider. His empathy and understanding about feeling like you may not belong or fit in with others have been helpful in his practice.
During high school, Kevin felt a calling to serve in the U.S. Marines. The Marines afforded Kevin an excellent education, and later his service in the Army helped him become a Physician’s Assistant.
Kevin learned important lessons from sports that helped him succeed and overcome adversity. He played in many team and individual sports, such as football, powerlifting, cross country, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and he learned many lessons from each. Kevin played football for a state championship team and was a powerlifter in the off-season. He learned that being accountable and devoted to incremental progress every day leads to achieving your goals. One of the biggest lessons in his life is that the outcome we desire often (if not always) waits for us on the other side of the effort. This idea translates to most aspects of mental health; we need to put in the effort to receive our internal reward.
Kevin treated thousands of soldiers and their families during his military career and there were many instances where he was able to help those suffering from PTSD, anxiety, adjustment, depression, and other mental hardships. As a medical practitioner, Kevin got his greatest satisfaction from seeing his patients’ mental health improve and when it was time for Kevin to retire from the military, he was inspired to dedicate the duration of his medical career solely to psychiatry. Kevin is fully dedicated to helping his patients get stabilized and ultimately thrive.
Kevin believes establishing trust while compassionately listening is the foundation of every conversation. He ensures you feel as comfortable as possible and feel central to the treatment decision. He believes when patients are engaged in their treatment the chances of improvement are vastly increased.
Kevin understands more deeply than many mental health practitioners the impact of trauma on mental health and how to help with closure, healing, and leaving some experiences far behind. He empathizes with both mental and physical trauma that others suffer, and he understands the journey to heal. He was involved in direct combat as a young Marine and spent 20 years next to service members with intense traumatic experiences. Kevin lost some close friends in combat and saw its deep impact on survivors. He has experienced and made peace with survivors’ guilt.
Kevin is very collaborative and works with patients to build a plan to better their mental health. He is a conscientious listener who cares deeply about inviting his patients to open up. You must truly listen to understand. And when you understand, you can help people heal, overcome, and discover their potential. And when you start to reach your potential and have success in areas you struggle or care about the most, you can truly live your best life. While caring for the many men and women in his assigned Army unit, Kevin realized that many normal people struggle at times with mental health. When Kevin treats, he will work and collaborate tirelessly to achieve breakthroughs and overcome issues.
Kevin is a father and stepfather who enjoys spending time with his family, running, and being outdoors and, loves the beach, which was a significant factor in relocating to Florida after he retired from the military. Since being in Florida, Kevin is often found near the water, where he has been discovering the joys of boating and fishing.
