What Led Sophia to Psychiatry?

Sophia’s passion for psychiatry developed during her time working in the emergency room. She saw firsthand how often mental health was at the root of what brought patients in, whether it was anxiety presenting as chest pain, trauma manifesting physically, or someone simply overwhelmed and without support. It became very clear to her that mental health isn’t separate from physical health; it drives it.

“If our mental health is not stable, everything else becomes harder. Our relationships, our work, our physical health, our confidence, it all stems from how we are doing internally. Mental health is foundational, and it should be treated as such. When that piece is neglected, nothing else truly feels steady.” – Sophia Schulman

Sophia saw firsthand how unaddressed mental health concerns can manifest physically and affect every aspect of life. These experiences strengthened her commitment to early intervention, trauma-informed care, and approaching each interaction with compassion rather than judgment.

Psychiatry allows Sophia to slow down, listen more deeply, and address the root, not just the symptoms. She wanted to be in a role where she could help people feel understood, supported, and empowered to live their best life all of the time, not just in moments of crisis. That deeper, long-term impact is what drew her here.

What Is Sophia’s Background?

Sophia grew up in Pennington, New Jersey. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked as a travel emergency room nurse in Phoenix, Arizona, an experience that profoundly shaped her perspective on healthcare and mental health needs across diverse populations.

Sophia completed both her undergraduate and graduate education at Chamberlain University, and in 2023, she relocated to Jupiter, Florida, where she continues to grow both personally and professionally.

Staying active and prioritizing her physical health is central to her life. Growing up as a dancer taught her how to navigate challenges with body image and cultivate body kindness, lessons she carried into her adult life and continues to carry into her practice with patients.

What Is Sophia’s Philosophy of Care?

“I want every patient to leave my office feeling understood, empowered, and equipped to thrive, both in their mental and emotional health and in their everyday life.” – Sophia Schulman

Sophia believes psychiatric care should never feel one-size-fits-all. Everyone comes with a unique story and set of experiences, and she makes it a priority to meet each person where they are. Mental health is deeply connected to the nervous system- how we respond to stress, process trauma, and regulate emotions- so supporting nervous system balance is fundamental to the care she provides.

Education is central to her approach. When patients understand how their brain and body respond to stress, trauma, and daily habits, they gain the knowledge and confidence to actively participate in their healing and build lasting mental wellness.

Medication management is an important and effective tool, and Sophia uses it thoughtfully when needed. Alongside this, she integrates holistic principles and lifestyle approaches, such as sleep hygiene practices, proper nutrition, movement, and stress regulation, to support overall wellness.

What Sets Sophia Apart as a Provider?

Sophia prioritizes listening and creating a safe, nonjudgmental space. Her goal is to make the process of mental health care feel less intimidating and more supportive, so people feel understood and empowered every step of the way.

What sets her apart from other providers is her combination of patience, active listening, and education-driven care. She doesn’t just treat symptoms, she helps patients build insight, confidence, and resilience so they feel truly supported both in her office and in their daily lives.

What Does Sophia Do Outside of Psychiatry?

Outside of psychiatry, Sophia tries to spend as much time outside as possible, either walking the beach looking for shells, exploring new trails, or taking her dogs, Ophelia and Otto, on long walks. She loves checking out new farmers’ markets, reading, and cooking, and if she’s not at work or home with her dogs, she’s usually at the gym.

Sophia cares deeply about helping people feel seen, supported, and understood. Her patients describe her as a built-in cheerleader because she always shows up fully for others, whether it’s patients, friends, or family. Sophia is a provider who will make you feel safe, confident and empowered to live your best life at Psychiatry of the Palm Beaches.
