What Led Kathryn to Psychiatry?

Watching someone completely turn their life around with the appropriate treatment is close to magic.” – Kathryn Segura

Kathryn’s path to psychiatry was inspired by the many patients and loved ones she saw struggling with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. During her time as a bedside nurse, she witnessed how the right support and treatment could completely change someone’s life.

One experience that especially shaped her perspective involved a close friend who faced overwhelming anxiety and depression after losing a spouse to addiction. Through therapy, medication, and support, that person was able to rebuild their life and care for her children with renewed strength. Seeing that transformation reinforced Kathryn’s belief that healing is possible and that no one should have to go through difficult seasons alone.

What is Kathryn’s Educational Background?

Kathryn grew up in Georgia before moving to Florida several years ago. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Psychiatry from Chamberlain University after spending more than a decade caring for patients as a nurse.

Her background in bedside nursing gave her a deep understanding of how emotional and physical health are closely connected. Those years of experience continue to shape the compassionate, well-rounded care she provides today.

What is Kathryn’s Philosophy of Care?

Kathryn understands how anxiety, depression, and hopelessness can dim the joy in life. Her goal is to help patients reconnect with that joy and rediscover their sense of self.

Kathryn says, “I want to help people find their happiness and light. I know it can be challenging, but when you strip away all the superficial things in life, the only thing that is truly important is being satisfied and happy in your life.”

Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, Kathryn focuses on helping people build a life that feels meaningful, balanced, and fulfilling. She believes mental health care should empower people not only to feel better, but to live their best life.

What Can You Expect During your Visit with Kathryn?

Kathryn believes the best care begins with listening. She takes time to understand each patient’s story, challenges, and goals before working together to create a treatment plan that feels supportive, practical, and personalized.

People often appreciate her ability to explain things clearly and help them understand the reasoning behind their diagnosis and treatment. She believes that when people understand the “why,” they feel more confident and empowered in their journey.

Her appointments are built on collaboration, trust, and open communication. More than anything, Kathryn wants her patients to know they do not have to face their struggles alone. She strives to create a space where people feel heard, understood, and supported as they work toward healing, growth, and the opportunity to live their best life.

What Does Kathryn Do Outside of Psychiatry?

Outside of psychiatry, Kathryn enjoys spending time outdoors, especially in the mountains and at the beach. She loves cooking, baking, reading fantasy and self-improvement books, and most of all, spending time with her children.

Kathryn believes deeply in personal growth and strives to pursue it in every area of her life, mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. The people she cares for often describe her as intelligent, communicative, and genuinely invested in their success.

Friends and colleagues describe her as resilient, loving, perceptive, and deeply compassionate. People often appreciate her calm presence, thoughtful communication, and genuine dedication to helping others feel seen and supported. Kathryn’s hope is that every person she works with leaves feeling heard, valued, and confident in their ability to move forward toward their best life.
